This is the sequel to Me Before You, which is about an ordinary young woman who goes through an extraordinary transformation after caring for a paraplegic young man with whom she falls in love. At first, After You feels almost anticlimactic because the first book was so intensely emotional; here we’re left to pick up the pieces. But then the plot begins to unfold into another love story. With humor interspersed with some serious themes like loss, separation, and abuse, the book makes for an interesting read. The movie, Me Before You, is now out, featuring Emilia Clarke, who plays the ordinary girl, Louisa Clark. (I haven’t seen the movie, although I’ve heard it leaves out a serious theme that a movie understandably cannot cover well in a short time.)

I was overjoyed when I realized that Me Before You had a sequel, until I discovered that she falls in love with the man on the motorcycle. I felt that was a bit far-fetched. And on a totally unrelated note: What deep metaphorical meaning does the title Me Before You conceal? I can’t think of anything.

You can view it as a general Me, as in you or that person, or me, how we were before You, as in the person who came into our life. Or, you can simply interpret it as what the book is about–Lou, in the first person viewpoint, her story, so she is me and You, of course, is Will.

That’s a very logical interpretation, thank you.

Given the theme, I can see the story being a thought-provoking one. I haven’t read the earlier book or seen the movie yet, though, so I guess that would be the place to start. 🙂

I found the premise intriguing too so I had to read it even though my most read genre at the moment is mostly suspense/ thriller. I had gone through a lot of romance books ages ago.
