Ground Beef with Potatoes and Hard-boiled Eggs (as filling for mini-meat pies)

This dish can be made ahead because pre-cooking potatoes and eggs is required. For a meal during the week, you can prep by browning the (1 lb.) ground beef, boiling the potatoes, and eggs and putting them in separate containers for assembly when you are ready to serve later. Continue reading

Baad Shoes

Slung around Blambi’s fleecey neck is a strap that supports a blue basket with a pink flower etched on the front. Little Tweetsie, Blambi’s main chick, is perched in the basket. She is his first and only love. They are runaways. Neither of their families approve of their pairing. They are too different, from two different barnyards. It is just not right, they claim. The President’s Shadow by Brad Meltzer (a book review)

This book is the third of a series about a young Archivist named Beecher White, who gets involved in the many intrigues going on in the White House. The underlying mystery about how his father had died is revealed in this book, and tied to the mystery of two dismembered arms, each planted in a strategic place that implies it’s an attempt to assassinate the President of the United States. You also get to know more about the other characters introduced in the first two books. If I give even a hint of what happens, I will end up spoiling a good read. Continue reading

Ground Beef with Peas, Carrots, and Mung Bean Sprouts

This ground beef recipe is a filling for egg rolls. Let’s start with the wrappers.

There are different types of egg roll wrappers. There are thick ones made of wheat that tend to overpower the filling and there are paper thin ones like rice paper or lumpia (loom-pyah) wrappers, both of which are found in Asian grocery stores. You can also use phyllo dough if you wish, but you would bake rather than fry them. The one type typically found in regular grocery stores is made of wheat. Whichever you prefer, the ideal taste I find is one with thin wrapper so the filling is the dominant texture and flavor rather than the wrapper. Continue reading

What We Do in the Shadows (a movie review)

This movie is a must-see for those who want to laugh. A unique take on vampire movies, What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary about the lifestyle of three vampires “flatting,” or sharing a place together. As documentaries go, this one includes different components like the reminiscing moments, a confessional, a self-revelation or occasional epiphany. Within such chapters, the stories told in the context of being a vampire are hilariously absurd. Because I don’t want to spoil it for you, I will give a small example. The main vampire telling the story talks about the differences in their behavior or “maturity level” because of their age differences, with one being over 800 years old vs. one who is under 200 years old, and then there is the “geriatric” who is over 8,000 years old and he looks like the vampire character in Nosferatu. Shift Gifts

A vase with purple misshapen polka dots, a hula dancer lamp, a beige tinted  statue of a nude–gifts you’re tempted to shift. Somebody may not be the wiser. What was presented to you is now gifted to another. What comes around keeps going around. Was it at Peggy’s shower when you first saw that doodad made by Ronco? On another occasion at Roscoe’s birthday party, the same gift by Ronco reappears. Christmas rolls around. Surprise! That doodad by Ronco is yours. How many times has this been re-gifted? Best not to break the chain. There’s a party coming up for Susie . . .

Cash Landing by James Grippando (a book review)

According to the author, James Grippando, his story is inspired by actual events that happened in Miami—a heist carried out by amateurs. The heist starts out boldly and goes well. The aftermath is when things start to unravel. The amateur crew comprises Ruban Betancourt, a man disillusioned with the law; his brother-in-law, Jeffrey, an overweight, drug addict leaching off his mother; and his uncle, Pinky, an ex-convict who was nicknamed as such because of how far down his manhood reaches to his pinky. They hire two other people, both former convicts. One of them is the driver whose role is to ditch their getaway vehicles. The other one is the insider who smooths the entry for the big steal.
