Day 5 was a déjà vu at the São Bento train station, where we boarded the 8:15 a.m. suburban train to Braga. We spent the whole day at a baroque capital founded by the Romans, who named it Bracara Augusta, and now referred to as Braga. Renowned for its numerous churches and nearby Bom Jesus do Monte pilgrimage center, Braga is home to the first cathedral in Portugal.

Did the hand sculpture creep you out? You took some nice photographs.

Thanks. Yes, the hand sculpture is rather unique. I didn’t include a picture of a mummified archbishop that was found “uncorrupt” when his tomb was opened in the 17th century. There were so many beautiful churches, inside and outside, but since I’m not an avid photographer, I didn’t take as many pictures as some people I saw. It was too much.

Really? That must have been strange to see a mummified archbishop. I saw a few sarcophagi (in a museum) but that’s about it.

Yes, the texture of the face looked like a giant dried apple or wood with a face carved on it and lips are missing or peeled back with teeth exposed. I can email it to you later if you want to see it

Ha, I’m sure the archbishop was very photogenic! I definitely want to see the image you took.
