This is a Western film with some graphic scenes and dialogue that make you think it’s from that golden era. The pace feels right and the acting is great from the likes of Kurt Russell, the town sheriff; Patrick Wilson, a husband hobbled from an accident; Robert Jenkins, the deputy back-up; and Matthew Fox, a man you wouldn’t expect had so many Indian kills.
The movie is about a group of savage inhabitants from the mountains coming into a small town and abducting a drifter, the town deputy, and the town nurse or midwife. Only the four people previously described are able and available to rescue them. Over five days, the would-be rescuers go through their own misadventures along the way. Let me stop now so I don’t spoil anything because you have to learn about all the mishaps and hardships on your own. There are some twists and a truly disturbing scene where . . . well, watch only if you have the stomach for it.
What attracted me to this movie is the star, Kurt Russell. I’d rate most of the movies he’s been in as pretty good. Then again, I like him so I might be biased. I’ve listed below the movies I’ve seen with him in a starring role. Because so many of them are ties, I’ve listed them in chronological order, from the most recent to the oldest. I haven’t yet seen his most recent, which is The Hateful Eight, another Western. I will eventually though because it is directed by Quentin Tarantino, another favorite of mine.
