In appreciation of Mexican culture, I want to highlight the work of singer/songwriter, Chavela Vargas, who passed away in 2012 but whose voice still lives on via various venues, including YouTube. She had an amazing voice. To learn more about her, go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chavela_Vargas. One of my favorites from her is Gabino Barrera, which I first heard in the movie sound track for Werner Herzog’s My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?. To listen to the song, click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDvkwuO_3YU.

I was surprised to find out the voice is from a woman. When I first heard the song, I thought it was a man, but it just grabs you. The movie from where I first heard the music is quite a strange movie too, so how the song was presented was rather fitting.

Yes that is what was so intriguing about the voice to me too. It sounded like a man at first. Haven’t seen the movie, though.

The movie is supposed to be based on a true event. About a man killing his mother presented in a surreal and somewhat absurdist way.
