This is a comedy about friendship and marriage. A young family recently relocates from Seattle to L.A. The dad, played by Adam Scott, and the mom, played by Taylor Schilling, along with their little boy, are in their neighborhood playground. They acquaint themselves with another young father, played by Jason Schwartzman, and his son. Jason’s character invites the whole family over for pizza night, which turns out to be quite an extended event. Hence, the title, The Overnight. The whole family ends up staying all night long for an evening full of surprises and laughs.
After the kids go to sleep, the four adults do a bit of partying. They end up knowing a lot more about one another than they bargained for. They pass the bong, the drinks, and . . . You can guess for yourself what other passes are made. Without spoiling anything and to give you a sense of the absurdities in the movie, Jason’s character paints b_ _tholes.
I watched this film because of Jason Schwartzman, who is such a hilarious actor. He plays his wacky character with such a straight face, it’s ridiculous. I find many of his films entertaining and difficult to rank because he’s so funny even a weak storyline can still shine. Included below are all of the movies (and one TV mini-series) I’ve seen him in, beginning with the most recent.
Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp (mini-series)
The Overnight
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Listen Up Philip
Saving Mr. Banks
Moonrise Kingdom
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Funny People
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
The Darjeeling Limited
Shopgirl
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
I Heart Huckabees
Slackers
Rushmore
Sounds like a great Netflix movie! Thanks!
